View Full Version : The Guide to Forum Rep

Heya all,
This is me trying to help some of the confusion over the new forum rep facilities in place.
1. Getting it Working
2. Usage Guidance
2.1. When to click what?
2.2. What does Reputation Do?
2.3. How Do I See My Points/Rep?
2.4. What Message do I leave a Member?
1: Getting it Working
The majority of us are used to the forum looking like:
http://www.caz-world.com/nf/rep/default.png
In terms of the new rep system you would press the green button above the name of the person making the post - to either increase or decrease the members rep (see Usage Guidance for more detail):
http://www.caz-world.com/nf/rep/green_button.png
Unfortunately, this template creates a Javascript error pops up when you press it. You are getting this error if clicking on the green button gives you nothing, and returns you to the top of the screen.
The suggested course of action is as follows:
Click on "User CP"
http://www.caz-world.com/nf/rep/change1.png
Click on "Edit Options"
http://www.caz-world.com/nf/rep/change2.png
Scroll to the bottom of that page and select "Default Style" then Click "Save Changes".
http://www.caz-world.com/nf/rep/change3.png
It will now look like:
http://www.caz-world.com/nf/rep/now.png
Selecting this template means you now have a weighing scales instead of the green box:
http://www.caz-world.com/nf/rep/new_green.png
You will get the following popup box to give reasons as to why you are giving them rep (good or bad).
http://www.caz-world.com/nf/rep/nowpopup.png
And get the following message once its been received:

2: Usage Guidance
I have a meeting with Dae later tonight to discuss some of the finer points and will update accordingly. Also, I would like officers to give this section a once over and give me some feedback on it. Not being privy to your conversations Im writing this from the little bits of impression I have found anywhere else.
So you've found the weighing scales and you have got the popup box, but are wondering what this means. When do you click that image? and what does it mean?
Firstly, I feel I have to make the distinction between the weighing scales and the exclamation warning sign.
http://www.caz-world.com/nf/rep/repreport.png
Clicking on the weighing scales gives you the following popup box:
http://www.caz-world.com/nf/rep/addrepbox.png
Notice that you can give a member positive or negative rep. Adding or Subtracting from a persons rep effects that members rep only. I explain below where you can see the rep and what this means.
It DOES NOT report a post to the forum moderator for review. This is where the exclamation warning sign comes in, the exclamation symbol is to say "If you have a minute moderator, please check this post, it is rude/offending/derogatory or simply unacceptable".
2.1 When to click what:
It would be hard to write a fully comprehensive list on when to click what, but I will try to cover the majority of bases.
* Weighing Scales to ADD Rep
You have found a post: inciteful, useful, intriguing, joyful.
It doesnt have to be an essay that explains the meaning of life. If you have asked a question, and someones responded solved or aided you in the solution of it, give them rep. If in a debate/heated conversational thread a member has stood back taken all points in and calmly pointed out their views, offered a solution or even defused a potential flaming, add to their rep. If a member posts useful information, i.e. Class Tips, Anti-Hacking Techniques, Gold Making Advice, Future Expansion/Patch Notes, etc. Give them rep. Organising groups, events, etc should also be rewarded as well as posts/threads intended to increase morale/cheer people up. The post/thread may not contain information that you fully agree with, you may not agree with it at all, but it may raise something that needed to be discussed.
* Weighing Scales to DECREASE Rep
You have found a post: off-topic, uninciteful, marginally offensive, condecending.
We've all written a post incorrectly intentionally or not where the wording was read by other members in a way that was interpretted as offensive; either when under the influence, in a fit of rage or even at that time of the month. Those types of posts have always been discouraged, but now we have a way to express our disapproval in a post without having to get a moderator involved or interrupting the way a thread was intended to be. The post may not insult your family, friends, wow skills or your chosen profession, but may make you feel uncomfortable or disheartend. However you may simply feel disappointed that the person could write something like that, to not consider the feelings of the readers.
* Reporting via the Exclamation Warning Symbol
You have found a post: offensive, disgraceful, rude, vial, etc.
We've all seen a report button, this alerts a moderator to a post of a vulga, awful post/thread that makes you angry or upset when you read it. Posts of this nature are damaging to all over guild morale. I'd say if you are reporting them give the person negative rep as well. Also, no point in replying to threads of this nature, upsets more and more people that way. Reporting them gets a moderator or site admin involved, which in turn will attract the attension of officers, let them deal with it, its what they are there for.
2.2. What does Reputation Do?
Consider Nightfall a faction on WoW, except here you are getting rep given to you by other members of our community. The more people that give you a reputation thumbs up, the more points you collect.
For example, before writing this I was on 103 points (ty /hugs) and at the start of writing this section I was on 215 (ty again *blush*). But what did this do for me?
The rep system is currently based on ranks, the more points you get the higher up the ranks you go. 103 points had me on rank 2, 215 got tme to rank 3. Ranks in place are as follows:
User has a little shameless behaviour in the past
User is an unknown quantity at this point -------> STARTING POINT
User is on a distinguished road
User will become famous soon enough
User has a spectacular aura about
User is a jewel in the rough
User is just really nice
User is a glorious beacon of light
User is a name known to all
User is a splendid one to behold
User has much to be proud of
User has a brilliant future
User has a reputation beyond repute
2.3. How Do I See My Points/Rep?
You can see your personal points total, via the "User CP" main screen on the website:
http://www.caz-world.com/nf/rep/points.png
Also you can see your rank by viewing any one of your posts, hover over the blips under the members total number of posts:
http://www.caz-world.com/nf/rep/blips.png
You can also see other members ranks in the same way as above, but not their points totals.
2.4. What Message do I leave a Member?
You are asked to provide reasons to why you are adding/subtracting reputation concerning a post. These reasons should be honest and to the point, be-aware that the member will be able to read the comment given (read via on the "User CP" default page) so be polite.
Its a great way to leave awknowledgement for hard work or incite and a way to show disappointment in a person without incuring the wrath of moderators.

in short
if you like a post give a good rep award
if you think a post is trolling or abusive a bad rep award
if you're not bothered don't give it any rep
the amount of rep you can give is dependant on your rep level(long term positive contributers have more say in how the community is run)
